¡Vamos a Puerto Rico! Pack Light/Pack Right

Keeping with the “Editorial Calendar” welcome to Wardrobe Wednesday! Apparently my readers like to know what’s going on in my clients closets, so I have reserved Wednesdays for real life wardrobe conundrums. Today I am featuring hot-to-trot Megan, she is a super sweet Zumba instructor who has a passion for fashion. She called on me to help her prepare her wardrobe for her upcoming trip to Puerto Rico… Let’s all have a moment for our jealousy to pass, okay now where were we? Ah yes, packing for an 8 day trip, what a double edge sword that can be with airlines charging for everything from an extra bag to an overweight suitcase, you can spend your hard-earned margarita money before your toes have even hit the sand if you aren’t careful. Due to the fact that I am recovering over-packer, I try to spread my message of “Pack light, pack right” where ever I go.

The goal with Megan was to utilize the wardrobe she has and give her several options on how to wear said pieces. Giving her options assures she is going to actually wear what she brought. There are few things worse than packing for a trip and not wanting to wear what you’ve brought. As my father has barked at me on many a family vacation, “You lugged it all the way here and we paid extra for it, you better wear everything in that suitcase”… so yes if you caught me fully clothed in 80+ degree weather in South Carolina circa ’98, that statement is why. ANYWAYS aside from my lovely family anecdotes… see how I remixed & matched Megan’s wardrobe so she will be traveling in style without the hefty price tag!

Megan explained to me there would be a lot of poolside going on, as she is staying at a resort but she wanted to make sure there were a few looks for walking around San Juan. She plans on doing some site seeing and shopping so I started this look from the bottom. Her boat shoes are ocean side chic, while still being practical for a long day of walking. They can be paired nicely with her crisp navy shorts and that smart little cross-body bag.

Another easy daytime look, goes back with these fantastic dark shorts. A superfine t-shirt or henley like the one shown above is perfect for walking around or just tossing on top of a bathing suit to go poolside.

Perhaps the island beat will take over? An outfit like this on deck if the moment presents itself. Great for day to-night, this is a fun look to give those shorts some spice. From the fab fedora, down to those neutral wedges {that are perfection, they can paired with more than 60% of what Megan packed!}and the subtle mix of prints, this outfit is vibrant and vivacious.

Another relaxed daytime option, casual mini striped shorts a bold t-shirt and the exploring essentials. I included the scarf in this look not only for its style factor but it can also come in handy to wrap your hair up in if the sun becomes super strong and you’re without a hat.

Need a tutorial on how to wrap your hair up in a scarf? HERE you go.

With a little help from a lightweight blazer, this look can go from day to-night too! Thanks to those amazing wedges, found at Bella Ro Hoboken by Quipid.

Whether it’s the pool or the beach, decisions… decisions… throwing something glam over that bikini can be this easy! A cotton maxi dress, a long necklace and a floppy hat and you will be giving Beyoncé a run for her money.

One maxi is never enough. Max it out with a bold printed style. This is the best of both worlds being primarily black and having a vibrant print only at the hem. Thinking this look calls for some slicked back hair up in that scarf, thin hoops, oversized sunnies and a latin lover. I think that covers all the major necessities.

A little less “Bo” and a little more “Pro” only a dash, I mean these are vacation looks we’re talking about, no need to be uber professional. The maxi dress topped off with her easy-going blazer is the best of both worlds. This is another great look that can go from day to-night effortlessly.

Trend Alert! The High/Low dress is and will be everywhere this Spring. I love the one that Megan has. It is an luxe cotton style in a simple khaki/black stripe that leaves room for you to give it a little punch with some cool accessories.

Or you can go sophisticated chic with these sultry stilettos and a pair of elegant chandeliers.

I see the hair in a tousled bun with a fresh flower pinned on the side, Muy Bonita!

It’s like the ocean has come to life with the wonderful palette on this dress. Pairing it up with her coral necklace pulls out the pop spots in the dress and again with those resourceful wedges! Amazing.

Don’t you love a dress that does all the work for you, it even comes with its own belt and it’s cute! {I am pretty particular when things come with a free belt…} And there are those wedges, again!

Without the belt this dress is still fancy free and gets a femme fatale flair with the accent of dark accessories.

Navy & Blackyou can dooo it! For those who heavily abide by the fashion rules of yester-year, grab a match and let those age-old faux faux-pas go up in flames. Black/White and Navy are a serious triple threat when it comes to summer chic.

So clearly these white bootcut jeans were an excellent purchase… and under $100, a must have! Megan bought them for our session which is why I styled them 3 ways right off the bat, so she could see what a major wardrobe staple they will be.

Is it me or are these white jeans making everything so much more fabulous?! Close your eyes, picture that top with regular jeans… see, not the same. It’s white-hot and giving me island fever! Due to the volume on the side of the shirt I would keep the hair (pulled back bun)/ jewelry minimal, just the bracelet shown and thin hoop earrings and POSSIBLY a bold lip… or am I pushing it here?

Last but not least… a well put together look for the flight! I am pretty sure according to TSA rules and regulations, you can no longer roll through the airport in head to toe sweatpants looking like a disheveled high schooler returning from spring break. These rules may vary per airport, but like I told Megan, First Class is as First Class does, so don’t look like a hot mess. Wear pieces that can be incorporated throughout your trip and make sure you read these fantastic tips from Isaac Mizrahi that are perfect for any jet set fashionista.

I had a lot of fun creating looks for Megan’s trip and helping her get the most out of what she is packing. {Now there is actually room in her bag to go shopping and bring back some treats!} Hopefully some of these outfits may have inspired you with pieces you have in your own closet, since it seems according to today’s weather, Spring may be a little closer than we think!
